Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI): Essential Life Insurance for Active Duty Military Personnel

Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) is a federally sponsored, low-cost term life insurance program designed to provide financial security to active-duty members of the U.S. military. This program ensures that service members’ families are protected in the event of the service member’s death, offering peace of mind during active service.

Who Is Eligible for SGLI?

SGLI automatically covers most active-duty service members, including those in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Space Force, and commissioned officers in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS). Reservists and National Guard members who meet training requirements are also eligible.

Coverage Details and Premiums

  • Coverage is available in increments of $50,000, up to a maximum of $500,000.
  • As of July 1, 2025, premiums have been reduced to $0.05 per $1,000 of coverage, making the monthly premium for maximum coverage $25, plus an additional $1 for Traumatic Injury Protection (TSGLI).
  • Premiums are deducted automatically from military paychecks, requiring no action from the service member unless they wish to adjust coverage or opt out.

Traumatic Injury Protection (TSGLI)

TSGLI is an important add-on that provides financial assistance to service members who suffer severe injuries, such as amputations or paralysis, during military service. Payments range from $25,000 to $100,000, helping cover rehabilitation and recovery expenses.

Managing Your SGLI Coverage

Service members can adjust coverage amounts, update beneficiaries, or decline coverage through the SGLI Online Enrollment System (SOES) on milConnect. Changes can be made anytime during service.

Why SGLI Is Vital

SGLI offers guaranteed acceptance without medical underwriting, stable premiums regardless of health, and automatic coverage for eligible service members. It is a cornerstone of military benefits, protecting families financially during uncertain times.

Example Scenario

John, an Army sergeant, is automatically enrolled in SGLI with $500,000 coverage. After a deployment-related injury, he receives TSGLI benefits to support his rehabilitation costs, while his family is financially protected by his life insurance coverage.
