🚨 2026 UPDATE: California removes 20-hour pre-licensing requirement for Property/Casualty, Life, Health effective Jan 1, 2026 (most lines). Only 12 hours Ethics/Code remains. Current requirements below apply through Dec 31, 2025. Update your study plan accordingly.

Getting a California insurance agent license (also called insurance producer license) is regulated by the California Department of Insurance (CDI). California has strict requirements for Property & Casualty (P&C), Life & Health (L&H), and other lines. No federal license applies—follow CDI process via Sircon/NIPR. Use this guide for pre-licensing, exams, fees, fingerprints, CE, and reciprocity.

California License Requirements (2026)

Through Dec 31, 2025 (pre-Jan 1 changes):

Eligibility: Age 18+, California resident, clean criminal record, high school diploma/GED recommended.
Pre-Licensing Education:
- 12 hours Ethics & Insurance Code (required for ALL).
- 20 hours P&C | 20 hours Life | 20 hours Health (line-specific).
- Approved providers: ExamFX, Kaplan (online OK).
State Exam: Prometric/Pearson VUE. 150 questions, 70% pass, $58 fee. Retake after 10 days.
Fingerprints: Required via Accurate Biometrics ($59) or PSI ($68.95). FBI/DOJ background check.
Application: Sircon or NIPR. $188 fee (resident producer). Processing: 2–6 weeks.
Renewal: Biennial, 24 CE hours (3 ethics), $188 fee.

Jan 1, 2026: 12 Ethics/Code ONLY (no 20-hour line requirements).
